“That’s like saying you don’t enjoy icecream because you tried to eat it using your bare hands.”
What could I possibly be talking about!?

The equivalent to deformed in the Genasi community, their abyssal counterparts are shunned for their bizarre manifestations. Genasi are closely connected to the elemental planes of existance and in the cosmology of their world, [...]

Forum Fridays: House Rules

Nick | October 23, 2009

This is just a compilation of house rules I found on a thread called “What are your house rules?” where people listed short and sweet summaries of what kind of stuff they do in their D&D campaigns. Here, I’m going to break down why I think some are pretty nifty, to pretty mediocre, to pretty stupid.

Ranger Across the Tabletop

The Ranger is one of my favorite classes. In 3rd Edition is was far too easy to crank their damage up to 11 by picking a few select feats and making sure to have a nice attack bonus. What made them really wonderful was part of what made the Paladin wonderful. They were a class that could physically attack their target but had more options because of their access to spells. A lot of people love these guys because of some classic characters in literature that were Rangers, guys like Aragorn or Drizzt.

It’s understandable to see how they would fill new Player’s Handbooks and Monster Manuals, but another DMG? Read the review to find out how they do it…

Forum Fridays: A New Series of Articles

I peruse the D&D forums a fair amount. There’s a lot on mix-max theories, home-brewed rules, and arguments why something new introduced in a supplemental book or magazine is lame or breaks the game. It’s a lot of people obsessing over theoretical nonsense instead of what makes the game actually fun or interesting. Forum Fridays brings you the gems that I manage to find in the desolate wasteland that is the official D&D forums.

A review of the 4th Power Project (so far)

Dave Chalker (calls himself “The Game” on this website) has taken it upon himself to translate d20 Modern into 4th Edition D&D’s set of rules, using the minimization of options as his guideline for gameplay. See what he’s been up to in this review!

D&D Insider Review: Fighter, The Great Weapon

Nick | October 13, 2009

A lot of people complained that the Fight Weapon Talents included in the original Player’s Handbook were far inferior to Martial Power’s Tempest Technique. This Dragon Magazine article aims to redeem such a mistake.

Review of the new D&D Class: The Seeker (Primal Power preview)

Nick | October 12, 2009

Beautiful and obvious. This class is conceptually what the 3rd Edition Ranger was. An archer that wields the power of nature on his side, shooting arrows and wielding magic. I loved the classic Ranger. One of my favorite characters ever was part of a Ranger-Paladin duo. I’m glad to see it return in spirit with a name that I dig a lot

I wasn’t doing these D&D Insider articles a few months back, so it’s taken me a bit to go back and mentally digest the plethora of material that was already available.

Druid Across the Tabletop

Nick | October 6, 2009

No one ever played a Druid in my campaigns. They were more complicated to play than a Wizard. Wild Shape was very convoluted and having a Beast Companion made it feel like you were juggling far too many things at the same time. If anyone had been willing to sift through all that nonsense, they would have found that they were one of the most powerful classes available…
