G4TV’s Women of the Web – Top 5 Assessment

I’m not calling this a prediction because I’m not predicting the future. I’m estimating an outcome that has already happened but has not yet been revealed.

Our friend Katrina Hill, a.k.a. Action Flick Chick at actionflickchick.com and @actionchick on twitter, had no intention of entering G4TV’s Women of the Web competition, not when the contest said things like nudity forbidden but near nudity strongly encouraged. Near nudity strongly encouraged? She figured she wasn’t what they were looking for. On the Thursday before the deadline to submit a video for the competition, the topic came up in twitter and then Facebook, where many people encouraged her to go for it. So she decided she might as well enter - at least she’d get some useful publicity for the website – but by gosh, she was doing it her own way.

From the onset of voting until the contest’s very end, she ranked #1 every step of the way. At first she was #1 by herself but then tied with self-described porn model Bob Suicide with both having 4-star ratings throughout the remainder of the contest. The scale did not indicate if that meant anything like 4.4 vs 3.6, vice-versa, 4.0 vs 4.0, or what.

Out of the 9 finalists, the top 5 will get to see their videos appear in a G4TV special to air December 29, hosted by Kevin Pereira from the Attack of the Show! tech-and-entertainment news series.

Here’s how I see the outcome. Remember that this is only my estimate, but good grief, look at the reasons why I see them this way.

#1
Katrina Hill
Action Flick Chick

rating: originally 5 stars, finished with 4 stars.

Google “Action Flick Chick” – results 718,000
website: Action Flick Chick http://actionflickchick.com
twitter: @actionchick (27,658 followers, follows most back + a few more)

video: shows website, celebrity photos, celebrity video, twitter, AOTS footage, playing video games, hitting punching bag, shooting gun.
comments received on video: 107
views at contest’s end: 6,237

G4TV interest: 90 g4tv.com forum posts; covered Dallas Comic-Con for Viewer Army segment on G4 series Attack of the Show!

Her message was to explain her position on the Internet as the Action Flick Chick, to show that her interest in G4 is nothing new, and then to demonstrate her interests in “guy” things like video games, boxing, and guns.
#2
real name unknown
Bob Suicide

rating: originally low, rose to 4 stars.

Google “Bob Suicide” – results 43,300
website: Suicide Girls
twitter: @BobSuicide (1,484 followers, only follows 5% that number)

video: Bob talks to camera.
comments received on video: 79
views at contest’s end: 5,806

self-assessment: Even when she had the same number of stars as Katrina, Bob referred to herself on twitter and in her blog as being in 2nd place.

G4TV interest: 1 g4tv.com post and it is about Women of the Web; apparently has known AOTS film critic Chris Gore intimately.

Her message was simply to say that she was wearing a Battlestar Galactica dress and planned to take it off. Seriously, that’s it! Oh, and she mentioned the Suicide Girls website three times.
#3 Sandy Behre
Lily Stitches
rating: originally 4 stars, finished with 3 stars.

Google “Lily Stitches” – results 4,110
webpage: Sandy’s Journal
http://sandyladoo2you.livejournal.com/
(some adult language)
twitter: @Lily_Stitches (140 followers, follows 131)

video: Lily talks while video shows her engaged in cosplay and burlesque.
comments received on video: 35
views at contest’s end: 5,920

self-assessment: “All I know is when I lose, it’s going to suck hard.”

G4TV interest: 4 g4tv.com forum posts, all about the contest.

Corner image of Lily talking was too shadowy to give a good view of her. Focus on burlesque and burleqsue cosplay distracts from any message about being into anything nerdy (i.e., video games) aside from the cosplay. Most people aren’t into cosplay.
#4 Laura Renee James
“Webernet Sensation”
rating: consistently 3 stars.

Google “Laura Renee James” – results 557
website: “the Internet” is the only information she mentions. We found her on Facebook.
twitter: unknown

video: with book, in bed with computer, playing video game, roll polygonal dice like craps, touches guy’s laptop, drinks, plays frustrated scientist, shooting gun while dressed as the Baroness.
comments received on video: 28

G4TV interest: none known; does not appear to have commented on the videos.

Laura had the most professional looking video, perhaps too professional for this contest. It was clearly consistent with the kind of sketches shown during G4 programs, but many posters complained that it made her seem fake.
#5 Megan Keller (sp?)
“Kung Fu Princess”
rating: originally low, rose to 3 stars.

Google: results not specific enough to her
webpage: unknown
twitter: unknown

video: Megan plays Wii, fights off a ninja, resumes playing Wii.
comments received on video: 34

G4TV interest: none known; did comment on her video.

Megan is cute and her video, while less complex than Laura’s, was consistent with G4 sketches. Some who saw it complained that playing Wii did not sufficiently demonstrate that she was much of a gamer.
