Interview with Sidewise Author Dwight L. MacPherson Part 1: Why Do Webcomics?

In part 1 of our interview with Dwight L. MacPherson, author and creator of the webcomic Sidewise which you can read at DC Comics’ online Zuda Comics, we discussed reasons for doing webcomics. In part 2, we discuss Zuda itself.

Llama: Is that why you decided to try the Zuda competition, so you’d have a different way of getting out there with a different company behind you?

MacPherson: The biggest reason actually is the community. I love the community over there. Zuda has probably the best online community that I’ve been a part of. I really liked all the interaction that was going on over there. It’s more like a team atmosphere. And yes, I definitely believe that webcomics are the way to build a following. I wanted to put my money where my mouth was, so I entered the contest and I won it and I’m not going to complain about the DC checks. That’s really nice, being a freelance writer. It gives you a definite income.

Now on the downside, of course, my agent and manager aren’t exactly thrilled about it because it’s pretty much locked in my property to Warner Brothers.

Llama: I noticed you’re represented by William Morris. How does a comic creator come to be represented by William Morris? Is it for the print or movie rights? What’s their interest in you?

MacPherson: They are totally about the Hollywood stuff. My agent is. He is shopping my properties around Hollywood, trying to get movie deals. He doesn’t help me as far as getting any kind of comic deals. I got to do that myself.

Llama: Zuda has worked well for you – you won. Are there things that you might like to see Zuda do differently?

MacPherson: Well, I would definitely like to see them give an RSS feed to each webcomic. They’re very good about keeping the site updated to what’s coming up, what comics are going to be put out online that day, but I would just like a reminder. I’m pretty busy. My writing schedule is pretty crazy, so just getting an email in your inbox that says that ‘New page of Dual’ or ‘New page of Celadore’ or High Moon is posted, and then you just go over there. But I do like the format. I think they have a great viewer. I don’t have any complaints about the site at all.

Llama: I’ve noticed with several Zuda comics that often the art will change a bit between page 8 and page 9. Sometimes quite a few months have passed in between. With Gulch, I know it was a deliberate decision that had to do with intentional variations in the artistic style. Were you deliberately making it an ongoing change or is that just a difference for this particular scene? Why did the art change a little between 8 and 9 in Sidewise?

MacPherson: Really it was the coloring that changed. Igor is still trying different things, trying to see what works best for him, so he’s actually trying a different style of coloring now. So I guess you could say his coloring skill has evolved. What you see now is phenomenal. I have a feeling that we’re going to go back and recolor the first eight pages.

Llama: To make them match?

MacPherson: Right.

to be concluded…
