Prototype- Alex Smash!
By Alex Langley - June 26, 2009
It’s no small secret that I absolutely love The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. When I heard that Prototype was a game being hailed as a spiritual successor to the superhero smash ‘em up, I had to give it a try. Lo and behold, the world doth spake the divine truth! Prototype is everything you could want from a Hulk ’sequel’ and so much more.

In Prototype, you play as Alex Mercer, a man with amnesia (Dum dum dum!) plopped in the middle of a doomsday virus outbreak, and you yourself seem to have the omega level version of said virus. It’s not all sniffles and trips to the bathroom with this virus, though. This thing turns Alex into a nigh-unstoppable juggernaut, with abilities you might find in the child of the Hulk, Venom, and T-1000. Alex progresses through the story trying to get revenge on those that inflicted this ailment on him, though God knows why he feels so motivated to do this. With the level of power he’s been handed, he should hunt the responsible parties down and throw them a freakin’ parade.
Gameplay wise, this thing is a blast and a half. Alex has a huge repertoire of abilities to choose from, ranging from whip-like appendages to cacophonous explosions of spiked tendrils to slay thine foes with. He’s fast, and ludicrously mobile, so much so that the next time you play GTA4 after playing this you’ll wish that Niko had caught wind of this virus.
All in all, I highly recommend this game. There’s a tremendous amount of fun to be had, and even after completing every single mission the game has to offer it’s still fun to leap off of the Empire State building and land on a guy, then slide around on his dead body for a little while.
Alex out.
Got somethin’ to say? Sling it my way.
