D&D Insider Review: A New Weekly Series

D&D Insider is Wizard’s attempt to catch D&D up to the 21st century. For fear of falling behind the nerd movement into gaming (more specifically World of Warcraft) Wizard made the move to 4th Edition more than just a serious revision to the rules, but also changed their approach to business all together. They created D&D Insider. They offer a TON of stuff for the price of admission to this program. Considering it has a price in between a magazine subscription and World of Warcraft, I must say they’ve really offered an experience that is squarely in between.

There’s a vast amount of stuff here to look into. I’ve let D&D Insider sit for awhile before I checked it out so I would really get the feel for what they’re trying to do. Kind of like how you can’t judge an MMO by it’s initial release because they’re still working out some of the bugs. They offer two digital magazine subscriptions, tools for creating encounters, a very in-depth Character creator program, and a compendium that compiles all of the information from the books and magazines into one place you can look it all up at.

You can download Dungeon Magazine and Dragon Magazine as PDF files. I’m happy they’ve done this because it makes it far easier to reference the material than it would be if I had to go to their website to read it. This has to be the part of D&D Insider that gets heavily pirated and probably why they offer all of these other tools to help make the subscription attractive. It’s a little annoying how often you have to sign back in to check out your D&D Insider content. I understand that they’re trying to protect these goodies and not accidently give them away. Still, it’s a bit tedious.

If you’re into Dungeons and Dragons, this is a must. It’s far cheaper than buying the books they release every month. If you subscribe to a year’s worth, it’ll only cost you sixty bucks. This is a pretty amazing deal.

Here are some of the things you can look forward to in these articles coming up in the following weeks…

4th Edition Monk

4th Edition Artificer

Hybrid Classes

Character Builder

The “Other Tools”

The return of Divine Domains

Characters that are (sort of) Undead

And more!
