21-year-old Karen Gillan has been announced as the next traveling companion to accompany the Doctor when the program (or programme in its homeland) Doctor Who resumes with its next season (series 5). The pretty young Doctor (played by Matt Smith, who will be the youngest Doctor ever) gets the company of a pretty young redhead. Karen previously played a different character under heavy makeup in the fourth season episode “The Fires of Pompeii.”

Even though she’s Scottish, her character doesn’t have to be. David Tennant, who plays the Doctor, is a Scot but doesn’t play his character with a Scottish accent. The BBC has not yet revealed anything about Karen’s new character.

Could she be a young Donna Noble?

The show’s fourth season ended poignantly as the Doctor had to purge all knowledge of their travels from the mind of his most faithful friend Donna Noble in order to save her life. She’d become part-Time Lord, but her human brain couldn’t handle the strain of that much information (fourth season finale “Journey’s End”). When the Tenth Doctor regenerates and becomes the Eleventh, what if the circumstances of his regeneration cause Donna to become young too?
